Residency Faculty
Susanna Evans, MD, FAAFP, DipABLM
Susanna Evans, MD, FAAFP, is the Hamot Endowed Chair and an associate professor in the Department of Family, Community & Preventive Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and core faculty with the Temple Northwest Community Family Medicine Program. She did a fellowship in rural family medicine/obstetrics and served in the National Health Service Corps. Dr. Evans is a Diplomate of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine and has started a LM curriculum within the residency. She has a clinical interest in women's health, preventive medicine, physician wellness and medically underserved populations. She has repeatedly been named "Top Doctor" by Philadelphia magazine.
In her free time, she enjoys anything outdoors, road races with colleagues and beach reads.
Janet Cruz, MD, Program Director
Janet Cruz, MD, FAAFP, is an associate professor in the Department of Family, Community & Preventive Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and the current Program Director to the Temple Northwest Community Family Medicine Residency Program. She is a board-certified family medicine physician in Philadelphia. She has a clinical interest in women's health, sexual health, and adolescent and college medicine. Of Puerto Rican roots, Dr. Cruz is passionate about diversity in medicine and increasing access for underrepresented minorities in the clinical arena.
Before coming to academia, Dr. Cruz was a United States Air Force military physician and medical director for the 436th Medical Group at Dover Air Force Base. Prior to that, she spent three years as a staff family medicine physician for the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath Air Base in the United Kingdom. In addition to clinical responsibilities, she coordinated training programs for wartime contingencies, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief response.
In her free time, she enjoys going to Puerto Rico, loves ToughMudders and is an ice hockey mom.
Munish Bakshi, MD, Associate Program Director
Munish Bakshi, MD, is the Associate Director of the Temple Northwest Community Family Medicine Residency Program and is an assistant professor in the Department of Family, Community & Preventive Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine.
Dr. Bakshi specializes in curriculum design and Evidence Based practice. He leads our residency’s initiatives in Scholarly and Quality Improvement.
In his free time, he enjoys baseball, F1 racing and classic rock.
Angela Silverman, MD
Angela J. Silverman, MD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Family, Community & Preventive Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine. She is a board-certified family medicine physician practicing in Manayunk. Dr Silverman has clinical interests in LGBTQ care, hospital medicine, and geriatrics.
Amanda Victoria Z. de la Paz, MD
Amanda Victoria Z. de la Paz, MD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Family, Community & Preventive Medicine’s Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine at Drexel. She is also the third-year clerkship site director for the Manayunk family medicine outpatient practice. She is board certified in family medicine and geriatric medicine. Her outpatient practice is located in Manayunk. She also sees patients in the post-acute and long-term care settings at St. Joesph’s Villa in Flourtown.
Nicole Davis, MD, FAAFP
Nicole Davis, M.D. has been a board-certified Family Physician since 2002. She works for Chestnut Hill Hospital and practices right outside of Philadelphia. She was born and raised in Philadelphia. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and earned her medical degree at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in 1999. She completed her Family Medicine residency at Montgomery Hospital in Norristown, PA in 2002.
Dr. Davis was elected the first African American President-Elect of the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians in 2014 and served as President from 2015-2016 and Board Chair from 2016-2017. She now serves as a delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians Congress of Delegates for the PAFP. She was chair of the Commission on Membership and Member Services for the AAFP in 2022. Dr. Davis served on the Board of Managers for Tower Health Partners as their Vice-Chair and is currently Vice-president of her hospital’s medical staff.
Dr. Davis loves being active in her community. In 2015 she was received a “Women Achieving” honor by the Philadelphia Tribune which upholds African American women’s achievements in corporate America.
Dr. Davis’ hobbies include traveling and gardening. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband and daughter.
Shemeica Binns MD, MS
Shemeica Binns MD, MS is an assistant professor in the department of Family, Community & Preventative Medicine at Temple Northwest. She is the head team physician for Chestnut Hill College and Plymouth Whitemarsh High School. Prior to Temple Northwest, she served as team physician for Drexel University, Rutgers University and Princeton University. Her clinical interests include sports medicine, sexual and adolescent health. She is the creator of our POCUS curriculum which is a collaborative for all three Temple family medicine residencies. She is also the faculty facilitator for the Sports Medicine rotation.
Kaitlin E. O'Malley, MD
Kaitlin E. O'Malley, MD, MPH is a Board-certified family medicine physician. She enjoys addressing a wide range of patient needs, including preventive care, chronic disease management and women's health. She has a strong interest in community medicine and with the help of Sharing Excess and a grant from Giant; she created our food pantry at our Manayunk clinic.
Dr. O'Malley obtained her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine and completed our residency in Family Medicine, then named Drexel/Tower Family Medicine Residency. When she is not working as core faculty at our program, Dr. O'Malley is the Family Medicine Clerkship Director at Drexel University and spearheads our Academic Medicine elective.
Her interests outside of medicine include being outside, watching bad reality TV and spending time with her chocolate lab, Wrigley. She also enjoys baking and has recently taken to nursing her sourdough starter named Rose.
Maalika Banerjee, MD, MPH
Maalika Banerjee, MD, is a board certified Family Medicine physician. She trained at Boston Medical Center, before joining the faculty at the Temple Northwest Community Family Medicine program. Her clinical interests include: women’s health, adolescent health, addiction medicine, and health disparities.
Jen Hamilton, MD
Dr. Hamilton is a professor in the Department of Family, Community, and Preventive Medicine and serves as the Associate Dean for Medical Education-Simulations for DUCOM. She is also the Pathway Director for Family Medicine at DUCOM. Additionally, Dr. Hamilton is the Councilor of the Alpha Omega Alpha Delta Zeta chapter. She has clinical interests in primary care, including women's health, integrative medicine and preventive care.
Leon McCrea, MD
Leon McCrea II, MD, MPH, FAAFP, is the Senior Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM). He is a leader in developing policies and processes to bolster diversity, equity and inclusion.
Dr. McCrea is an associate professor in the Department of Family, Community & Preventive Medicine, and former program director of the Drexel/Tower Health Family Medicine Residency. He is the program director for the Drexel Pathway to Medical School, a post-baccalaureate pipeline program focused on students historically underrepresented and financially disenfranchised.
After earning his human biology degree at Brown University, Dr. McCrea earned his MD and Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh. He trained in family medicine at Crozer-Keystone Health System where he was recruited to join the faculty of Crozer-Keystone’s Family Medicine Residency Program, where he subsequently became the associate program director. Dr. McCrea’s academic interests include curriculum development, mentorship and competency-based evaluation. His clinical interests include women’s health, adolescent medicine, contraception, men’s health and office-based procedures. He was asked to serve on the membership committee of the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors and subsequently served on the Diversity and Health Equity Task Force. He has served on the board of directors of the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors. Dr. McCrea currently serves as the President of the Family Medicine Educational Consortium. He is a national speaker and educator in leadership and currently serves as distinguished faculty in the American Academy of Family Physicians Chief Resident Leadership Development Program.
Annette Gadegbeku, MD
Annette Gadegbeku, MD is Associate Dean of Community Health at Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM). In this administrative role, she works to establish local partnerships to promote urban health equity in collaboration with the University. Dr Gadegbeku received her bachelor’s degree in Biology at Brown University, obtained her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, and completed her Family Medicine Residency training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. After residency, she was recruited as faculty in the Montgomery Family Practice Residency Program, then later appointed faculty at the DUCOM in 2009. Dr Gadegbeku is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family, Community & Preventive Medicine and Chief of the Division of Community Health. Her academic interests include urban and underserved community medicine, adolescent medicine, women’s health, and global health. She engages students and faculty in health equity–related scholarship and service and collaborates on community stakeholders’ events.
Dr. Gadegbeku has a passion for underserved, marginalized, vulnerable, and at-risk populations with a focus in harm reduction. Her research interests include but are not exclusive to the impact of community engagement on health disparities in underserved and marginalized populations, as well as impact on curricular education, clinical service, and trainee knowledge, skill, attitudes, perspectives, and future community engagement in their careers. She integrates opportunities for community partnership, as well as inter-professional community engagement, education, and community-based participatory research across all schools, colleges, and departments within Drexel University.
Kristen Ryczyk, MD
Kristen Ryczak, MD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Family, Community & Preventive Medicine and director of the Women's Health Education Program at Drexel University College of Medicine. She is a board-certified family medicine physician practicing in Manayunk and Wyncote.
Steve Zinn, MD
Steven L. Zinn, MD, is director of clinical services for Drexel University College of Medicine's Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine, where he is an assistant professor. He is board certified in internal medicine, with added qualification in geriatric medicine. Dr Zinn has a focus on value-based care and led our department in achieving Patient-Centered Medical Home status. He sees patients in Manayunk, Philadelphia. He has repeatedly been named "Top Doctor" by Philadelphia magazine.
JulieAnne Hlavac-Bruno, MD, FAAFP
Dr. Hlavac Bruno is an assistant professor in the Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine. Dr. Hlavac is committed to resident and medical student education and previously served as the Pathway Director for Family Medicine for DUCOM. Dr. Hlavac has clinical interests in pediatrics, women’s health, and value-based care.
April Barnum, DO
April Barnum, DO, is an assistant professor in the Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine.
April Barnum, DO, CAQSM, is a member of Drexel University’s Student Health Center team and has special expertise and training in sports medicine. Board certified in family medicine, osteopathic manipulative treatment and sports medicine, Dr. Barnum provides comprehensive medical care for Drexel students, including prevention and holistic treatment of illness and injury. She also provides medical care for physically active individuals and student athletes of all skill levels and sports. Coming from a strong athletic background herself, she feels it’s important to encourage her patients to lead active, healthy lifestyles.
Kim Nguyen, MD
Kim-Huong Nguyen, DO, is board certified in family medicine and practices at the Drexel Student Health Center. Her interests include preventive medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine, and she has a passion for integrating acupuncture to help promote wellness. Prior to coming to Drexel, Dr. Nguyen worked as a primary care staff physician at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center in Philadelphia. She is a native Vietnamese speaker.
