Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Integrated Interventional Radiology residency program at Temple University Hospital! As a vibrant 700+ bed hospital in North Philadelphia, our program offers an incredible opportunity for IR residents to dive deep into all aspects of Interventional Radiology, encountering a diverse array of disease processes right from the start.
In the first three years, you’ll spend the majority of your time on diagnostic radiology rotations, where you will receive excellent training across all diagnostic imaging modalities. This comprehensive training ensures you gain the confidence to independently interpret and communicate findings to our referring clinicians. Our strong didactic curriculum is designed to prepare you thoroughly for the CORE exam, ensuring you approach it with confidence and success.
During the dedicated IR years, you’ll be fully immersed in the language and practice of procedural medicine. You'll be at the helm of the IR service, acting as the primary contact for consulting services, and providing guidance and leadership to junior residents. Our system of graduated autonomy allows you to take on increasing responsibility, eventually becoming the first operator during complex cases. You’ll always have the unwavering support and backup from our attendings, who treat you as true peers and colleagues, fostering lasting professional relationships.
Temple University Hospital is a busy center for the treatment of penetrating trauma, offering a unique environment where IR residents utilize their imaging knowledge, clinical acumen, and procedural skills to care for patients affected by gun violence. Regular interdisciplinary collaboration with Trauma Surgery and critical care services enhances this experience. You will also be a vital part of our Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT), managing patients with acute life-threatening pulmonary emboli. Additional high-volume procedural areas include uterine artery embolization, vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty, hepatobiliary interventions, and dialysis interventions.
Our IR residents also complete approximately one-third of their dedicated training at Fox Chase Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Here, you’ll gain excellent training in Interventional Oncology, mastering a variety of embolic and ablative techniques, and engaging in all aspects of patient care from preprocedural to postprocedural stages. Additionally, your rotation at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia will provide you with invaluable experience in pediatric interventions at one of the world’s premier children’s hospitals.
At Temple, we understand the importance of work-life balance. Our residents enjoy ample time to attend to family obligations, partake in important life events, and relax with colleagues outside of work. Philadelphia, with its bustling restaurant scene, major sporting events, fantastic concert venues, and rich historical and cultural attractions, offers a perfect backdrop for a balanced and fulfilling life outside the hospital.
We are excited to receive your application to our residency program! If you have any questions or need further information, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We look forward to potentially welcoming you to our team!
