Chief Residents' Statement

Welcome to Temple Anesthesiology!

Thank you for your interest in our residency program!

We are excited to share details about the truly outstanding training experience you will receive as a resident in the Department of Anesthesiology at Temple University Hospital. The majority of residents’ training is spent at Temple University Hospital (TUH), the main campus of the Temple Health system, right in the heart of Northeast Philadelphia. TUH is a nationally recognized Level I trauma center with a high volume of critically ill patients. We also host a robust transplant service, which includes heart, lung, liver, kidney, and pancreas transplants. Our lung transplant program is one of the most active and experienced in the nation, and it has been ranked nationally for eight consecutive years. We recently transitioned to Temple Women’s and Family Hospital in September 2025. This will only expand your experience in obstetric anesthesiology with exposure to high-risk and medically complex parturients.

Our training is further enhanced by rotations at Jeanes Hospital, Fox Chase Cancer Center, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Both TUH and Jeanes Hospital have a high volume of orthopedic, vascular, and general surgery cases, which provide ample opportunities for honing regional and neuraxial anesthesia skills. In the CA-2 and CA-3 years, residents rotate through the renowned Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for a comprehensive pediatric experience. The program also offers an opportunity to consider global health electives in either Kenya or Rwanda to broaden their clinical skills and learn to adapt in resource-limited environments.

Our program structure is unique as several blocks of anesthesia are included in the first-year curriculum. New residents start in the operating rooms as soon as orientation is completed.

For those wishing to pursue fellowship training, Temple Anesthesiology has an outstanding track record of placement into nationally recognized fellowship programs across all major subspecialities of anesthesiology, including cardiothoracic, pediatrics, obstetrics, chronic pain, regional/acute pain, and critical care.

Philadelphia is a lively city with a relatively low cost of living accompanied by rich attractions including iconic art, “America’s most historic square mile,” year-round sporting events, an acclaimed culinary scene, and world-class museums. If you’re looking to explore outside the city limits, Philadelphia’s central location in the Mid-Atlantic region provides convenient access to other east coast cities such as New York, the Jersey Shore, the Pocono Mountains, and more!

As a residency group, we enjoy our time in and out of the hospital! This includes going to Phillies or Eagles games, our annual Department holiday party, and numerous happy hours.

Our residents are a diverse group, coming from many different backgrounds and geographic areas. We are in a variety of life stages – some of us are single and enjoying life in the city, others live in the suburbs with their children and enjoy an easy commute. At the end of the day, our differences help make us a stronger group; if you were to ask us, the people make our program what it is!

Thank you for your interest, and best of luck in the application process!
