microRNAs are small, non-coding RNAs that repress protein translation to regulate gene expression and are critical modulators of drug-seeking behavior. The goal is to demonstrate the feasibility of isolating microRNAs from human blood and performing microRNA sequencing on the isolated samples. Comparing microRNAs isolated from patient blood with microRNAs identified in our rat studies to further examine the translational potential of opioid-regulated microRNA patterns in the blood.
An Observational Study of Xylazine-Associated Skin Lesions (Xylazine)

Patients with opioid use disorder (OUD), particularly those with xylazine-associated skin lesions, are at significant risk for sepsis and death. Yet the changes to these patients’ immune profile and the underlying pathophysiology of their lesions are poorly understood. Xylazine study is a prospective observational study utilizing blood samples, punch biopsies, clinical images, participant demographics, and medical history to explore possible causative factors and strategies for prevention and treatment.
Identification and Characterization of HCV-positive patients in the Emergency Department (HCV Titer):

Clinical Outcomes and Demographic Trends of Drug-Related Cardiac Arrest Patients in Philadelphia from 2016 to 2023 (CARES)

CARES is a study aimed at enhancing response systems and improving survival rates from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Patient demographics will be analyzed and drugs found positive in urine test will be used to compare patients who have cardiac arrest in the setting of overdose with patients who have cardiac arrest of cardiac etiology.

This interventional trial compares novel prehospital stroke transport algorithm (OPUS-i) to a traditional prehospital stroke transport algorithm to improve outcomes in rural stroke patients by determining the effect of implementing a data-driven prehospital stroke algorithm on time to and endovascular therapy.
