ACGME-Accredited Cardiothoracic Fellowship Program
Temple University Hospital’s two-year, ACGME-certified Thoracic Surgery Fellowship Program prepares trainees for clinical practice in cardiothoracic surgery and leadership within the field. At Temple, trainees will find a program that truly lives its tripartite mission of patient care, research and education. The fellowship experience prioritizes education and mentorship through an apprenticeship model of training. Our program aims to graduate leaders in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, skilled in the latest procedures and technology and confident in their ability to practice in the environment of their choice.
Notable aspects of the Thoracic Surgery Fellowship Program include:
- An apprenticeship model with three-month rotations, one fellow per rotation.
- Faculty who are leaders in their fields, enthusiastic educators and well-respected clinicians. We have a deep pride in working at Temple and upholding the hospital’s 125-year history of caring for the underserved.
- A high volume of procedures, including robotic-assisted thoracic surgeries, foregut and esophageal procedures. In 2018, we performed 144 lung transplants and are currently the largest volume lung transplant provider in the nation.
- A program at the forefront of life-saving technology, including thoracic robotic surgery, the total artificial heart, pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE), and heart, lung, and heart-lung transplantation.

Fellows in Temple’s Thoracic Surgery Residency Program will receive in-depth experience, and rotations in the following areas:
Thoracic Surgery: Fellows will gain experience in robotic, minimally invasive, and open surgical techniques for lung cancer, benign lung disease, lung-volume reduction, thymic disease, esophageal cancer, and benign foregut disease. Fellows will also train in advanced bronchoscopic and endoscopic techniques, including EBUS, stenting, and ablative procedures. Fellows will have rotations at Temple University Hospital and
Fox Chase Cancer Center.
Cardiovascular Surgery: The cardiovascular experience includes minimally invasive surgery for cardiac conditions, complex aortic, and endovascular surgery, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), PTE, surgery for end-stage cardiopulmonary diseases, including heart, lung, and heart-lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), coronary artery bypass, and valve surgery. Cardiovascular rotations are at Temple University Hospital.
Congenital Heart Disease: Fellows train at Nemours Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children for the congenital experience. Temple’s cardiothoracic fellows receive a personalized apprenticeship experience with the congenital surgeons at Nemours. Faculty members provide an experience in advanced congenital surgery as well as minimally invasive surgical approaches and hybrid techniques.
