About the Program

Welcome to the Temple Obstetrics and Gynecology residency education section. The program currently has 25 residents. Temple University Hospital's residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology is a four-year categorical program approved for six residents at each level. At the PGY-1 year level, there are 6 categorical positions with one preliminary position, totaling in 7. The Program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education and provides all requirements for certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Our goal is, while providing excellent patient care, to provide the quality of resident education that will allow our graduates to be able to practice the highest standards of Obstetrics and Gynecology and to be competitive for a fellowship position should they wish to obtain one.

The residency program is structured so that residents assume increasing responsibility as they progress through the program with specified objectives to be achieved on each rotation. Our program emphasizes a broad education in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology with rotations through all the subspecialties.

Over 2,500 women deliver at Temple University Hospital annually. Our obstetric population often has limited access to prenatal care, and we see a wide variety of complicated pregnancies. We still teach operative vaginal deliveries. The Obstetrical Service is quite active and includes a very busy high risk obstetric clinic and diabetes clinic, staffed by our Maternal-Fetal Medicine faculty. Outpatient clinics provide a wide range of experience and pathology. The Gynecology Service is very busy and experience in gynecologic surgery is particularly strong. Residents receive education in all areas of gynecologic surgery, including pelvic reconstruction surgery, operative laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and second-trimester terminations.

There are numerous scheduled teaching conferences, including weekly teaching rounds on the surgical services, a weekly Chairman's critique conference where patient management is discussed, and weekly grand rounds in OB/GYN. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology also conducts an active research program, with residents encouraged to become involved in ongoing research and required to participate in at least one research project during their four years of training. Overall, the program is well-rounded with an excellent balance of clinical training, structured education, and research opportunities.
