Resident evaluation by the faculty. Electronic resident evaluations are completed at the end of each rotation or at the time the specific attending leaves service. The evaluation form has been created to ensure uniformity in assessing the ability of each resident to meet the expectations of each rotation's objectives and identify educational needs. Evaluation will contain an assessment of medical knowledge, history and physical examination presentation, patient care, responsibility, attendance, and patient and peer relationships. Each resident has the right to discuss his/her evaluation with the program director, and although it is not required, it is highly encouraged that the evaluating attending physician discusses the evaluation with the resident.
Resident evaluation by patients. Written resident evaluations are completed by clinic patients the end of their visit.
The RITE (Residency In-service Training Exam) will be used to evaluate each individual's strength and educational needs. This test is mandatory for all residents and although there is not a specific passing grade, it does ascertain the resident's fund of knowledge.
Faculty evaluation by the residents. Residents evaluate faculty members biannually. A written electronic evaluation form is provided and this information is utilized to demonstrate the strengths and identify areas that require improvement. Programmatic issues are discussed in faculty meetings. The Chairperson meets with the faculty regularly and specific issues relating to the teaching program are discussed.
Evaluation of the program by the residents. Residents meet with the program director on a semi-annual basis in order to review the cumulative impressions of the faculty members. Progress, strengths and educational needs are identified and the program director provides information and guidance to improve performance and competence. Remedial methods include direct supervision by a senior resident and attending, the assignment of topics in the areas of educational need, and delays in annual promotion. The resident has the opportunity to append a written response to the written record. The written record of the quarterly evaluation is filed in the resident's permanent record.
Residents also participate in the evaluation of medical students rotating through the Neurology Clerkship.
