Message from the Temple Endocrinology Fellowship Program Director
On behalf of the Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at Temple University Hospital, I would like to thank you for your interest in our Fellowship Program. We are confident that our program will provide you with superb training, whether your aim is to go into a clinical practice or to become a faculty member at an academic institution.
Educating future endocrinologists is a key mission of our section. Fellows gain exposure to endocrine care at both Temple University Hospital - Main Campus and Temple University Hospital - Jeanes Campus, as well as a variety of outpatient practices that provide exposure to a wide variety of pathologies. Fellows see their own patients in two half-day continuity clinics per week - one devoted to diabetes and one to general endocrinology - in addition to working directly with faculty in their own clinics. Fellows follow their own panel of patients throughout their training, a responsibility that enhances their clinical experience. Our fellows are trained by our highly experienced faculty who take pride in training and mentoring future endocrinologists.
In addition to “bedside” teaching, our program has an extensive schedule of didactics, with weekly journal club, clinical case conference and endocrine grand rounds as well as a year-long core curriculum lecture series that is always well received by our fellows. We also have monthly Thyroid & Parathyroid and Pituitary multidisciplinary conferences, along with added opportunities for hands on training in thyroid ultrasound & FNA, insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors, and DEXA interpretation. Endocrine fellows are also integral to educating residents and medical students, and the Lewis Katz School of Medicine is located across the street, giving fellows opportunities to be involved with medical education.
The Temple University Hospital endocrinology fellowship offers diverse opportunities for scholarly activity and research. Several of our faculty members are highly regarded researchers with track records of quality research, funding and publications. Our fellows consistently present their work at national meetings of the Endocrine Society, AACE, ADA and ATA as well as the local Philadelphia Endocrine Society and Temple’s own trainee research symposium. Though our fellowship program has a clinical emphasis, we provide our fellows with a research mentor and they regularly participate in quality improvement and scholarly projects.
Temple University Hospital has a commitment to providing care to patients in North Philadelphia. We focus on serving our community to ensure all patients have access to high quality specialist care. We have also incorporated education on social determinants of health and health equity into our didactic sessions. For fellows who want further training in this area, there are opportunities within the the Urban Bioethics Program.
Although our faculty have diverse backgrounds and varied interests, we remain committed to educating future endocrinologists, providing high quality care to our patients and advancing our understanding of endocrinology through groundbreaking research.
