Temple's NIH Research Funding for Neurosciences, Physiology, and Pharmacology Among Highest in State and Nation

Temple University School of Medicine’s (TUSM) Neuroscience Department ranks 18th in the nation – the second highest ranking in Pennsylvania – in total neuroscience research grant funding awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2013.

TUSM’s Physiology Department ranks 20th in the nation – the highest in the state – and its Pharmacology Department ranks 24th in the nation.

Those data were released recently from the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research Institute, a non-profit group based in North Carolina that ranks academic departments of U.S. medical schools according to the amount of federal grant funding they attract.

“We are very proud of these numbers. They are an impressive indicator of the depth and breadth of our biomedical research enterprise, as well as the success of the strategic focus we have made in our research programs," said Arthur M. Feldman, M.D., Ph.D., Executive Dean of TUSM and Chief Academic Officer of Temple University Health System.

“With the continued dedication and hard work of our veteran basic-science and clinical researchers, combined with the talent and energy of our newly-recruited physicians and scientists, we will focus on increasing our rankings even further and, in turn, continue to generate the kind of understanding and learning that translates into cutting-edge treatments for our patients,” Dr. Feldman added.
