Temple University School of Medicine and Lancaster General Hospital Sign Academic Affiliation AgreementTemple University School of Medicine (TUSM) is expanding its relationship with Lancaster General Hospital (LGH) as LGH will become a major clinical teaching site for Temple medical students. TUSM signed the academic affiliation agreement with LGH’s parent organization, Lancaster General Health (LG Health) on April 27.

The agreement took effect May 11 when TUSM students began their clinical rotations at LGH in four specialty areas – Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Family Medicine and Psychiatry. During the 2015-16 academic year, up to 64 TUSM medical students will be rotating at LGH in these specialties, with other rotations expected in the near future.

“Healthcare today takes place in many different settings and this academic affiliation will provide a rich variety of patient care experiences for our students,” says Arthur Feldman, MD, PhD, Executive Dean of TUSM and Chief Academic Officer of Temple University Health System.

“One of the most important elements of an academic affiliation is the quality of the medical staff, and Lancaster General Health’s physicians are among the very best in Pennsylvania,” says Denise Salerno, MD, Associate Dean for Academic Affiliations at TUSM. “For a number of years, Temple students have done their Family Medicine clerkships at Lancaster General Hospital and they have had wonderful experiences. We know our students’ medical education will be enhanced by the opportunity to complete more of their rotations here.”

“This academic affiliation with Temple is great news for our patients and staff,” says Thomas Beeman, PhD, FACHE, President and CEO at LG Health. “Temple’s desire to partner with us reaffirms the quality of medical teaching and care that we offer on a daily basis. We are thrilled to be academic partners with one of the most respected medical schools in the nation.”

As part of the affiliation agreement, Christine Stabler, MD, Vice President of Academic Affairs at LG Health, will assume the additional title of Associate Dean at the Temple University School of Medicine. In this role, she will coordinate and direct the clinical education program and oversee the TUSM students’ clinical experiences at LGH.

Temple’s other academic affiliations include the hospitals and healthcare facilities in the Temple University Health System, Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Pa., Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pa., Allegheny Health System in western Pennsylvania and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. Temple also has a clinical campus at Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pa., and a regional campus at St. Luke’s Health System in Bethlehem, Pa.
