Misha Mutizwa, MD, Appointed Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Director of HIV Dermatology at Temple

News September 16, 2014

Misha Mutizwa, MD, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Temple University School of Medicine, and Director of HIV Dermatology at Temple University Hospital. He will also serve as Associate Director of the Dermatology Residency Program.

Dr. Mutizwa specializes in general dermatology and complex medical dermatology, with his primary clinical and research interests being HIV/AIDS-related dermatoses and inpatient dermatology. He will see patients at multiple sites within the Temple Health network.

"I am excited to be joining Temple Dermatology," said Dr. Mutizwa. "Dr. Gil Yosipovitch has done a tremendous job in assembling a talented and dynamic team. It's clear that everyone involved is deeply committed to the department's success, and I look forward to helping establish Temple Dermatology as a leader in patient care, education and research, both in the region and nationally."

Additionally, Temple's new subspecialty HIV Dermatology Clinic will launch under Dr. Mutizwa's direction later this month. "Unfortunately, Philadelphia still has one of the nation's highest rates of HIV infection and we know that most of these patients will present, at some point, with a dermatologic complaint – either related to HIV infection itself or to treatment effects," said Dr. Mutizwa. "HIV-related skin disease can be quite disfiguring and is a common reason for poor patient compliance with their antiretroviral regimens. Addressing patients' dermatologic complaints has been shown to enhance patients' outcomes and has a profound impact on their quality of life. I'd like to work closely with Temple's HIV primary care doctors and our infectious disease specialists to make this clinic a recognized resource for the region and a model for other academic institutions."

"We are extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Mutizwa to Temple," said Gil Yosipovitch, MD, Chair of Dermatology at Temple University School of Medicine, and Director of the Temple Itch Center. "He is an outstanding clinician, educator and leader who will play a large role in advancing patient care and research, as well as the continuing growth of the Dermatology Department."

Dr. Mutizwa comes to Temple from University of California, San Francisco, where he was Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology. He earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine, and completed a dermatology residency at Washington School of Medicine/Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, where he also served as chief resident.
