J. Todd Kuenstner, MD, Named Medical Director of Clinical Laboratories at Temple University Hospital

J. Todd Kuenstner, MD, has been appointed Medical Director of Clinical Laboratories at Temple University Hospital, and Chief of Clinical Pathology and Associate Professor of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM).

Board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Dr. Kuenstner earned his medical degree at Albany Medical College in Albany, New York. He completed an Internal Medicine Internship and Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Kuenstner also earned his master’s degree in chemistry at George Washington University.

"I am pleased to be joining Temple's Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine," says Dr. Kuenstner. "I look forward to working with a world-class team dedicated to providing excellent clinical and laboratory services to the clinicians and patients we serve."

Dr. Kuenstner specializes in clinical chemistry and his research interests include non-invasive hemoglobin testing, testing for Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis, and Crohn’s disease.

"Dr. Kuenstner has a substantial amount of experience in clinical pathology and medical directorship of large multi-hospital clinical laboratories," says Yuri Persidsky, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at LKSOM. "He will be a great asset to the team and we are pleased to welcome him."

Prior to joining Temple, Dr. Kuenstner was a Clinical Assistant Professor at the West Virginia University School of Medicine. Early in his career, he worked as a staff pathologist with the U.S. Army at the Frankfurt Army Regional Medical Center in Frankfurt, Germany. There he was awarded the Army Achievement Medal for conducting autopsies on victims of the attack on the USS Stark.

Dr. Kuenstner is a member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Association for Clinical Chemistry and International Association for Paratuberculosis. He is also a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists and a Fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry.
