Honoring Lewis Katz School of Medicine's Top Teachers

News November 06, 2019

"Great teaching is at the heart of any great academic medical center, and the Lewis Katz School of Medicine is no exception.”

With those words, Susan Wiegers, MD, FACC, FASE, opened the 2nd annual Educational Excellence Awards program on October 3rd in the medical school’s Luo Auditorium.

“While all in this room are certainly worth of celebration, today we take a minute to honor those among us whose dedication and passion has earned special recognition from their students and peers,” said Dr. Wiegers, President and CEO of the Temple Faculty Practice Plan and Senior Associate Dean of Clinical and Faculty Affairs at LKSOM.

Awardees were chosen by their fellow faculty members – a novelty at LKSOM, where until recently all faculty teaching awards, including Golden Apples, were selected by students. Nominations for the Educational Excellence Awards came from both faculty members and students, but the winners were chosen by a committee of faculty.

Before closing the ceremony, Dr. Wiegers also acknowledged several other Temple faculty members who have received recognition for their teaching, including Lawrence Kaplan, MD, FACP, Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean of Inter-Professional Education, who received a Temple Great Teacher Award, and Judith Litvin Daniels, PhD, Associate Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Vice Chair of Education for Anatomy and Cell Biology, and Associate Professor in the Fels Institute for Cancer Research, who received a Lindback Foundation Award.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed a reception and music by the Temple TachyChordia a cappella group.
