Embracing Medicine and Creativity: The Inspiring Journey of Najya Williams at Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine

Najya Williams, a third-year MD student at Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, has a unique perspective on the intersection of medicine, creativity, and cultural identity. In reflecting on her experiences, influences, and aspirations, her story offers a glimpse into a journey shaped by passion, empathy, and a commitment to holistic care.

Regarding her third year at Katz, Najya reflects, "Being a third-year MD student at Katz is such a rewarding and full circle experience. I've been overwhelmed by the sense of belonging and joy that I feel in being part of the team and taking care of some of the most amazing people I've ever had the privilege of meeting."

Najya's background as a Black woman has significantly influenced her approach to patient care. She shares, "My identity as a Black woman has definitely influenced my journey in the medical field in what I feel are very important ways. My family experiences have made me better able to serve my patients when they express fear, concerns, or doubts about treatments."

As an author and poet, Najya explains how she incorporates her creative pursuits into her medical education: "When I learned about Temple's Narrative Medicine program, I knew that I found something special. As a Graduate Certificate candidate in the Narrative Medicine program, I've been given the unique opportunity to continue writing with dedicated time and resources, inside the hospital and beyond."

In celebrating Black History Month, Najya pays tribute to Zoanne Clack, MD, MPH (writer, producer and medical advisor for “Greys Anatomy”) noting, "I am so deeply inspired by her commitment, not only to her patients, but to feeding her love for storytelling and narrative in a way that is accessible and beloved by so many. Because of her commitment to medical and artistic excellence, I know it is not impossible to curate the same for myself as I continue this journey.”

Looking ahead, Najya shares her excitement about applying to Family Medicine, expressing her hope to "become a physician that my community wants and needs. It is my sincere hope that I can continue to sweeten the lives of those around me, one word and one visit at a time."
