NIGMS Multidisciplinary Training grant (T32)
- Appointment to this T32 grant covers the majority of the student stipend, 60% tuition and $300 towards a scientific meeting
- Applicant must be a US Citizen, US National, or the current holder of a Permanent Resident Visa.
- Traineeships are available for two years starting July 1, following completion of lab rotations and selection of an eligible mentor as thesis advisor within the CBGNN and the MCBS clusters, with annual reappointment
Eligible Sponsors
For all fellowships, sponsors must be CBGN or MCBS cluster Graduate Faculty mentors of this T32. Sponsor must be the Principal Investigator on a multi-year, peer- reviewed grant (e.g., NIH, ACS, DOD) in order to support the research activities planned. One objective of the Program is to distribute these awards throughout the clusters, and thus we generally aim to adhere to the “one trainee per laboratory” tradition, though candidate qualifications are strongly considered in this decision.
Eligible Candidates
Before beginning the appointment, trainees should have completed year 1 in BMSC OR completed Y2 of the MD/PhD program.
If you plan to nominate a candidate for this opportunity, submit one PDF consisting of the following information to Dr. Xavier Graña: xgrana@temple.edu by 5:00 p.m. EST on June 1.
A complete application consists of the following:
- An introductory Letter from the mentor, including THREE SECTIONS:
- a summary of the proposed research project
- a tailored training plan for the candidate consistent with the student’s career goals
- a statement that the mentor will conduct annual Individualized Development Plan reviews with the candidate that will include a thorough examination of the personal myIDP results of the trainee (interests and skill matches and values). This is not intended to be a letter of recommendation, but to highlight the training value of the project the student will complete during the training period, and how the student will be mentored during this period (3 pages max, please).
- Mentor Biosketch, including current funding (standard NIH format).
- List of Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows/Associates trained by Mentor in the last 10 years, and their present work or training status. Junior mentors who have mentored a PhD student to graduation, should include a letter of commitment from a senior co-mentor.
- Applicant Biosketch (NIH format for F30/31 proposals) including a statement explaining their research experience, their desired training objectives during the proposed fellowship period, and how this training opportunity will help the candidate meet their current career goals (350 words). The biosketch should also include the undergraduate and graduate academic record
- Lab rotation abstracts (200 words) and individual Mentor Lab Rotation Review forms. Include overall Rotation Review form, if available.
- Optional: A letter of support from a major Y1 course director, BMSC program director or a rotation mentor if needed to further explain the student academic or research record.
Upon receipt of the applications, the T32 Steering Committee will determine which applicants will be invited to meet with the committee. It is estimated that final appointment decisions will be made prior to July 1st.
For questions concerning the submission of an application, please contact Dr. Xavier Graña: xgrana@temple.edu or Dr. Jonathan Soboloff: soboloff@temple.edu.
