Dr. Darilyn Moyer Receives Intergenerational Send Off

News June 23, 2016

In September, Dr. Moyer will take over as Executive Vice President/CEO of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the largest medical-specialty organization in the nation.

After being at the same institution for 35 years, you attract an intergenerational crowd when it’s time to say goodbye.

That was the scene on June 21 when Darilyn Moyer, MD, FACP, was feted at a farewell reception in the lobby of the Medical Education and Research Building. In September, Dr. Moyer will take over as Executive Vice President/CEO of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the largest medical-specialty organization in the nation.

Dr. Moyer leaves Temple as Professor of Medicine, Executive Vice Chair for Education, Internal Medicine Residency Program Director, and Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education. A 1985 graduate of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM), she completed her Internal Medicine residency at Temple and later joined the faculty.

According to the numerous speakers at the reception, Dr. Moyer is widely respected for her medical expertise but also her commitment to teaching and furthering the careers of students, residents and colleagues alike. Many praised the close personal relationships she forged with colleagues and her calm and supportive nature.

“As Internal Medicine Residency Program Director, she has mentored more than 350 trainees who’ve gone on to roles of prominence at academic medical centers across the country. This, I know, makes her very proud,” said Larry Kaiser, MD, FACS, Dean of LKSOM and President and CEO of the Temple University Health System.

“Darilyn has devoted more than three decades of service to Temple’s school of medicine and health system. Plain and simple – we’re the better for it,” added Dr. Kaiser, who presented Dr. Moyer with a 1981 bottle of wine from his personal collection, the same year she started medical school at Temple.

Dr. Moyer’s ascension to the CEO positon at the ACP caps years of service to the organization. She became an ACP fellow in 1995 and was the Governor for Southeastern Pennsylvania from 2010-14. She was Chair of the ACP Board of Governors from 2014-15 and served on the organization’s Executive, Finance and Health and Public Policy Committees. She is also a member of the ACP Board of Regents.

Other speakers at her farewell reception included current colleagues, Temple faculty members who were former residents under Dr. Moyer, and a trio of current chief residents who praised the warmth, wit and wisdom she showed to all.

“When you work with Dr. Moyer, you want to impress her…make her proud of you,” said Alexandra Lane, MD, Chief Resident in the Department of Medicine.

One of the last speakers was Scott Rosenberg, MD, Professor of Medicine at Temple and Dr. Moyer’s husband of 35 years. He described how the couple met in medical school in 1981 when they were “randomly assigned as lab partners.” He went on to praise her kindness and intelligence and shared some humorous and poignant “behind the scenes” stories that illustrated both traits.

At the end of the ceremony, Dr. Moyer was presented with a wooden Temple chair with a plaque that read: “In sincere gratitude for your dedication, contribution and wisdom. With much respect and fondness, The Department of Medicine.”

“As a Temple Made physician, I want to thank everyone who I have had the honor and privilege to learn from and work with on the journey of medicine – students, trainees, faculty staff and patients!” Dr. Moyer said in conclusion.

As the speeches ended and the crowd broke up to enjoy refreshments, a long line of well-wishers quickly formed in front of Dr. Moyer. Hugs, smiles and laughs were the order of the hour…a fitting send-off to a colleague everyone called friend.
