The William Maul Measey Institute for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety provides simulation tools to aid in the development of curricula that encourages residents to cultivate procedural skills and enhance their clinical decision-making process. Our residents, fellows, and faculty are granted 24-hour access to the simulation center where both FLS box trainers and Inovus LapAR simulation equipment to practice for eMIGs are available. There are additional laparoscopic and hysteroscopic training equipment at the Temple Women and Family campus that also accessible 24 hours a day. Our simulation curriculum is particularly notable for the involvement of highly professional standardized patients. This allows development of interpersonal and emotional skills and perhaps most importantly the ability to self-reflect in a low-pressure environment.
Simulation Curriculum
Simulation is an invaluable educational tool in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Our program includes once monthly simulations at the SIM Center located in Medical Education and Research building at Temple Main Hospital Campus. Examples of simulation programs include:
Obstetrics | Gynecology |
|---|---|
Vaginal delivery | LEEP |
Shoulder dystocia | Abnormal uterine bleeding |
OB Hemorrhage | Basic suture tying |
OB laceration | Manual vacuum aspiration |
Informed consent and disclosure | Laparoscopic Entry |
Pre-eclampsia | Basics of hysteroscopy |
Delivering bad news | eMIGs training |
Operative delivery | Vaginal hysterectomy |
Breech delivery | Uterine manipulation and morcelation |
Essentials in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Certification
Our department has developed a simulation curriculum that affords residents an opportunity to learn the essentials of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery in a consistent, scientifically accepted format; and to test cognitive, surgical decision-making, and technical skills, all with the goal of improving the quality of patient care. The cost of the training course as well as the exam are covered by the department.
