The Department of Translational Research has been at the forefront of the institutional strategy to support translational research. For a decade, the Department has maintained a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-certified laboratory that served as the high-throughput COVID-19 testing laboratory during the pandemic. Department faculty initiated and continue to support the Katz BioBank and Clinical Research Support Core laboratory. This core laboratory supports clinical trials from across the Temple University Health System and Fox Chase Cancer Center. The Core laboratory also supports investigator-initiated research projects in gastroenterology, cardiovascular surgery and neurosurgery, and work from the Center for Asian Health.
Other translational protects include the discovery and testing of candidate anti-tuberculosis compounds, studies of cannabinoid modulation of fibrosis and cancer in metabolic liver disease, development of a colon cancer organoid bank, use of phosphatidylserine-blocking nanoparticles as improved anti-thrombotic with reduced bleeding risk funded via an NIH STTR Phase 1 award, and development of novel point-of-care diagnostic assays.
