Satya P. Kunapuli, Ph.D. Director, Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center

The Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center at Temple University’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine is dedicated to advancing knowledge about the intersection of normal and abnormal blood clotting, inflammation and vascular health.

Our researchers study how platelets, clotting factors, and immune cells affect both normal health and disease. By comparing healthy clotting processes (hemostasis) with harmful changes such as thrombosis, we can identify what drives coagulation-related illnesses. This research has already led to new diagnostic tools and points toward therapies that may stop or reduce dangerous clotting.

The center was founded in 1970 by Dr. Sol Sherry, whose research on streptokinase helped save many lives by changing how doctors treat heart attacks, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Scientists and doctors on our team work together to explore the genetic and biological systems involved in clotting and inflammation. Their work extends to insights about conditions where blood vessel growth plays a role, such as with cancer. Central to our mission is training predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows to advance this vital research.

Through all our work, we ultimately save lives by building knowledge about blood clotting and creating treatments that improve patient care. Read on to learn more.
