  • Temple Students - Ultrasound Devices

    Lewis Katz School of Medicine is the First Medical School in Philadelphia and the East Coast to Provide All First-Year Students with Butterfly iQ+ Ultrasound Devices

    Each member of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine Class of 2025 received Butterfly iQ+ ultrasound devices, along with Temple-branded stethoscopes, at the annual White Coat Ceremony today, Friday, Aug. 6. The handheld, portable ultrasound devices were made possible through a generous donation by Ronald Salvitti, MD ‘63. The gift is the first of its kind for medical students in Philadelphia and on the East Coast.

  • Breanna Price - Physician Assistant Class

    Student Spotlight: Breanna L. Price, Physician Assistant Class of 2021

    Breanna L. Price is a member of the Class of 2021 who will graduate Friday, July 30, from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program. Before enrolling at Temple, she worked as an emergency room technician at Jefferson Abington Hospital and a volunteer EMT for Bensalem Emergency Medical Services. A native of Croydon, Pa., she graduated from LaSalle University in 2012 with a degree in biology. This Q and A has been condensed.

    Temple and Maternal Wellness Village Partnership Selected for $5.99 Million in PCORI Research Funding for Study on Black Maternal Heart Health

    Researchers at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, in partnership with community-based providers from Maternal Wellness Village under the auspices of Oshun Family Center, have been approved for a 5-year, $5.99 million award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to compare two approaches for reducing heart disease risk factors in Black birthing people. The overarching goal of the study is to eliminate disturbing disparities in heart disease, including heart attack and stroke, among Black women and birthing people during and after pregnancy.

    Jun Yu, MD, Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Sciences at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, who was recently granted tenure, is working hard to understand the basic science behind a leading cause of heart disease and to discover ways to stop it in its tracks.

    A Philadelphia Inquirer feature story on inherited forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) included insight from Terry Heiman-Patterson, MD, Professor of Neurology at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. The article told the story of familial ALS, the decision to undergo genetic testing, and new therapies in development through the lens of those who have been affected by the disease, both patients and family members.

    New JAMA Study Led by Dr. Roberto Caricchio

    Media outlets, including Healio Rheumatology, HCPLive and Daily Mail, highlighted a new study published in JAMA authored by Roberto Caricchio, MD, FACR examining the effect of the IL-1 inhibitor canakinumab (Ilaris) vs. placebo on survival without invasive mechanical ventilation in patients hospitalized with severe COVID-19.
