Message from the Chair

Gary S. Cohen, MD
Herbert M. Stauffer Chair, Diagnostic Imaging
Chair and Professor, Radiology
Radiologist-in-Chief, Temple University Health System

Temple Health, one of Philadelphia's leading academic medical centers, is home to more than 1,000 physicians and scientists who share the mission of bringing innovative treatments to patients.

The Department of Radiology at Temple is an exciting place to learn and work. With over 40 radiologists covering all subspecialties, our department provides outstanding, cutting edge clinical service to the patients we serve, while providing dynamic and varied learning environments for our 24 diagnostic radiology residents (6 per year). In addition, 12 to 15 medical students are assigned to radiology rotations each month.

Radiologists in the Temple University Health System care for patients at several hospitals that have over 800 beds combined. Temple University Hospital (TUH) is the largest and primary teaching hospital in our system. Fox Chase Cancer Center, a free-standing, NCI-designated and nationally ranked cancer center, and TUH – Jeanes Campus are co-located on a campus several miles north of TUH. In addition, TUH – Northeastern Campus and TUH – Episcopal Campus are both 1-2 miles east of our main campus and serve patients in their respective neighborhoods. Together, over 450,000 radiology exams are performed a year in Temple Health.

In August of 2015, a collaboration between Temple University Health System and GE was announced which will place us at the forefront of creating an imaging service that works for patients across the system. The agreement will not only modernize the entire fleet of imaging equipment over the next 7 years, but promises to do so while also improving efficiency and value.

Clinical research is performed in all subspecialties and numerous protocols are underway. There are numerous collaborations with other departments, both clinical and basic science. Currently, ongoing research is supported in magnetic resonance (DTI, fMRI and resting state connectivity), brain physiology, nuclear medicine, molecular imaging, and in mechanisms underlying millimeter wave theory.

The Department of Radiology offers strong clinical services, an excellent training environment, and outstanding research opportunities.

Sincerely,

Gary Cohen, MD
