Temple University Hospital Awarded Highest Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers by the Joint Commission

News February 27, 2018

Temple University Hospital (TUH) has been designated by The Joint Commission as a Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, the highest level of stroke certification. The certification signifies that TUH continues to meet the Joint Commission’s established criteria for a Primary Stroke Center while also delivering advanced stroke care 24/7, including advanced neuroimaging and endovascular neuro-intervention, providing staff with the unique education and competencies to care for complex stroke patients, and maintaining a database for tracking patient outcomes.

“We are extremely proud to be designated as a Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center,” says Verdi J. DiSesa, MD, MBA, President & CEO of TUH, Chief Operating Officer of Temple University Health System, and Senior Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs and Professor of Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. “This recognition is a testament to the work of Dr. Paul Katz, Director of Temple’s Comprehensive Stroke Program; Dr. Kadir Erkmen, the Surgical Director of the program; and the entire stroke team, whose dedication puts Temple among a select group of hospitals capable of delivering complex stroke care to all categories of cerebrovascular disease.”

Prior to earning this designation, TUH underwent a rigorous onsite review when surveyors evaluated Temple’s adherence to The Joint Commission’s standards and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, as well as compliance with mandated performance measures – a framework for consistently excellent care which leads to improved outcomes. The certification is awarded for a two-year period at which time TUH will be resurveyed.
