New Chair of Urban Health and Population Science Sets Ambitious Goals for Department

Grace X. Ma, PhD, Associate Dean for Health Disparities, Laura H. Carnell Professor in Urban Health and Population Science and Founding Director of Center for Asian Health, is the newly appointed Chair, Department of Urban Health and Population Science, Lewis Katz School of Medicine. As a leader in the field, Dr. Ma is continuing her committment to mentoring faculty members and researchers, developing plans to ensure research targets are met, and fostering collaborating with translational scientists.

One of her primary goals is to grow the department's research on health disparities among populations in urban communities. "Fostering productive collaboration between healthcare providers and community leaders in the planning, development, and implementation of health initiatives is essential for our minority communities," Dr. Ma emphasized. "I believe that in my role as chair of the Department of Urban Health and Population Science, I can provide essential support for these efforts." She is also excited about supporting research projects that improve urban healthcare outcomes, noting "I am eager to work with faculty members and researchers to develop innovative solutions to address the unique health challenges facing urban communities."

In addition to her research goals, Dr. Ma is dedicated to enhancing the department's educational programs. She believes that helping the next generation of students is critical to advancing urban health and population science research efforts. To achieve this, she plans to collaborate with departments at Katz to develop educational programs that better prepare students for careers in medicine and healthcare.

Dr. Ma offers valuable advice for young Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) individuals aspiring to pursue medicine or healthcare careers stating "Embracing cultural heritage enhances patient and community connections. Seek AAPI mentors for guidance in this evolving field. Stay updated on medical advancements and policies and prioritize self-care to sustain your career. Despite challenges, stay committed to your goals and advocate for diversity and inclusion in healthcare.”

"I believe that helping the next generation of students and fellows is critical to advancing research efforts centered on urban health and population science," said Dr. Ma.

As the new Chair of the Department of Urban Health and Population Science, Dr. Ma is committed to significantly impacting urban health and population science.
