The Marjorie Joy Katz Dean of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine Dr. Amy J. Goldberg Elected to Serve as Chair of The American Board of Surgery (ABS)

The American Board of Surgery (ABS), the national certifying body for general surgeons and related specialists, is pleased to welcome Dr. Amy J. Goldberg as chair for 2024-2025.

Nominated to the ABS by the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma in 2018, Dr. Goldberg served on the previous ABS Board of Directors (now the ABS Council) until 2019 when she was elected to serve as a director on the new governing board of the ABS.

The Marjorie Joy Katz Dean of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine (Katz), Dr. Goldberg is a nationally celebrated trauma surgeon, educator, and violence-prevention innovator, devoting more than 30 years to medical education, clinical practice, and community service.

She has held leadership positions at Temple, including Chief of the Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Division; Director of the General Surgery Residency Program; the George S. Peters MD and Louise C. Peters Chair and Professor of Surgery and Interim Dean of Katz.

Her research has focused on penetrating trauma injuries and the impact of gun violence prevention and intervention programs. Dr. Goldberg also serves as co-lead in the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Health Systems Implementation Initiative (HSII) to accelerate the uptake of practice-changing research results in clinical care to improve quality and patient outcomes.

She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She then completed general surgery residency training at Temple University Hospital followed by a fellowship in traumatology and critical care at the University of Maryland, Shock Trauma Center.

A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Goldberg was designated a Master Surgeon Educator in 2021. Her publications have appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association, The Annals of Surgery, and The American Journal of Surgery, and she is an editorial board member of the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery.
