On December 9, 2024, the Lewis Katz School of Medicine’s Student Diversity Council hosted its third annual North Philly Flex, a vibrant event dedicated to uplifting Black and Brown entrepreneurs in the North Philadelphia community. Vendors lined the venue, showcasing everything from handmade jewelry to flavorful culinary creations, all while fostering a sense of community and empowerment.
North Philly Flex has grown significantly since its inception, creating stronger ties between Katz and its surrounding community. This year’s event once again highlighted the school’s dedication to supporting local businesses and fostering meaningful connections.
Event Highlights
The 2024 North Philly Flex brought together local vendors and community members in a lively celebration of talent and entrepreneurship. Vendors showcased unique products and services, including art, food, and wellness goods, attracting attendees from across the neighborhood. The event also featured activities that added to its dynamic atmosphere, such as complimentary cuisine and opportunities for attendees to connect with the entrepreneurs behind the businesses.
Community Impact
The core mission of North Philly Flex is to bridge the gap between Katz and the North Philadelphia community by providing a platform for collaboration and support. The event offers local entrepreneurs an opportunity to gain visibility, expand their reach, and foster meaningful connections with new customers.
Dante Puntiel, MD’26, President of the Student Diversity Council, spoke about North Philly Flex and its history, "North Philly Flex originated from a desire to celebrate and uplift the vibrant Black and Hispanic small business community in North Philadelphia. Recognizing the underrepresentation and unique challenges these businesses face, the event was envisioned as a platform to provide them visibility, connect them with broader audiences, and highlight their contributions to the local economy and culture."
Over the past three years, the event has expanded significantly in both scale and impact, featuring a broader array of products and services along with rising vendor participation. Each year, enhancements guided by community feedback have sharpened the event’s focus on fostering meaningful connections between vendors and attendees.Puntiel also emphasized the event’s broader impact, stating, "North Philly Flex has been instrumental in creating economic and networking opportunities for participating vendors. Many businesses have reported increased exposure, new clientele, and valuable partnerships because of their participation. Looking ahead, we are planning to create a resource highlighting local Black and Hispanic-owned businesses, specifically showcasing those that have participated in North Philly Flex in the past."
Udokama Ezekwe, MD’26, Operations Manager of the Student Diversity Council, reflected on the event’s success: "What truly stood out to me was the incredible camaraderie among the vendors. Many of them had participated in North Philly Flex before, and it was heartwarming to see how they had stayed connected and were genuinely excited to reunite. Their affection and sense of community were inspiring. I was also deeply touched by the appreciation they showed us, as medical students, for organizing the event."
Katz Mission in Action
North Philly Flex serves as a shining example of Katz's efforts to strengthen its bond with the surrounding community. Puntiel highlighted, "The event aligns seamlessly with the school’s mission to advance community engagement and improve health and well-being in North Philadelphia. By creating a platform that empowers local businesses, the event addresses social determinants of health, such as economic stability and community cohesion, which are vital to building a thriving, resilient community."
Ezekwe added: "North Philly Flex has deeply resonated with the North Philadelphia community because it warmly opens the doors of Temple's Medical School to its neighbors. Historically, relationships between large institutions and underserved communities can face challenges. However, this event beautifully demonstrates that Katz students are wholeheartedly dedicated to serving and uplifting this community in diverse and meaningful ways beyond healthcare."
Looking Ahead
As the Student Diversity Council reflects on this year’s success, plans are already underway for an even more impactful North Philly Flex in 2025. Building on lessons learned, the event aims to grow in scope and continue amplifying the voices and talents of Black and Brown entrepreneurs in North Philadelphia.
"One of my favorite memories from this year’s event," Puntiel shared, "was seeing vendors reconnecting with one another—hugging, catching up, and sharing their experiences from previous years. It’s moments like these that truly capture the spirit of North Philly Flex and the connections it fosters."
Ezekwe echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of community building: "I hope that vendors leave North Philly Flex feeling supported and valued, with an expanded consumer base and a positive impression of Temple. For attendees, I hope they discover new businesses to support and are reminded of the vital importance of building meaningful relationships with the community they serve."
Through North Philly Flex, the Katz community demonstrates the power of collaboration and shared growth. By providing a space for local entrepreneurs to shine, they reaffirm the importance of celebrating diversity and supporting the community’s vibrancy and resilience. "This event beautifully demonstrates the impact we can have when we come together to serve, uplift, and inspire," Ezekwe concluded.
