RESEARCH INTERESTS
The Lu Laboratory investigates the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which chronic kidney disease (CKD) accelerates cardiovascular diseases, with a particular focus on atherosclerosis and abdominal aortic aneurysm. CKD affects more than 15% of adults worldwide and is associated with a substantially increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. A hallmark of CKD is the accumulation of uremic toxins and the development of chronic endotoxemia, characterized by elevated circulating lipopolysaccharide (LPS) derived from Gram-negative bacteria.
Our research focuses on identifying and characterizing uremic toxin receptors and LPS receptors that interact to promote vascular inflammation and remodeling. We are particularly interested in vascular endothelial cells, the specialized cells that line blood vessels and serve as the first barrier exposed to circulating uremic toxins and endotoxins. By investigating the synergistic effects of these pathogenic stimuli on endothelial dysfunction, innate immune signaling, and vascular inflammation, we seek to uncover novel mechanisms driving CKD-associated cardiovascular disease.
By integrating vascular biology, immunology, and mouse genetics, the Lu Laboratory aims to elucidate the fundamental pathways linking kidney disease to cardiovascular disease and to develop innovative therapeutic strategies for patients with CKD-associated vascular disease.
