Meet Dean Goldberg

A nationally celebrated clinician scholar, educator, and violence-prevention innovator, Dr. Goldberg has devoted more than 30 years to medical education, clinical practice, and community service at Temple and beyond. 

Dr. Goldberg came to Temple as a general surgery resident in 1987, joined the faculty in 1993, and has held a succession of leadership positions, including Interim Dean of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine prior to being named dean in 2022, following a national search.

A master trauma surgeon, Dr. Goldberg spent 13 years leading Temple’s trauma program -- coming face-to-face with Philadelphia’s gun-violence epidemic. Adamant to stem the tide, she created Cradle to Grave, Fighting Chance, and other community violence prevention programs, garnering the attention of media outlets such as NPR, ABC World News, CNN, The New York Times and the Washington Post, including a feature story in the Huffington Post.

Her research has focused on violence prevention and intervention, therapeutic and interventional trials for critically ill patients, and radiographic assessment for early identification of complications from penetrating trauma.

Educator and Leader

A Master Surgical Educator, she's dedicated to medical education and training future physicians. She has received numerous awards for her teaching expertise, including Temple's Great Teacher Award.

A nationally recognized trauma surgeon, she was also the first woman to be Chair of Surgery at Temple. In addition, she serves as Chair of the American Board of Surgery, a significant national role.

A Temple Journey

In addition to building a nationally renowned career at Temple, Dr. Goldberg has also dedicated herself to the university's critical mission through progressively responsible leadership roles, culminating in her appointment as the Marjorie Joy Katz Dean of the Katz school of medicine at Temple University in 2022.

Multiple awards have lauded Dr. Goldberg for her groundbreaking work, including The Philadelphia Award, recognizing extraordinary civic commitment and social responsibility. And she also received The Great Teacher Award, Temple University’s highest teaching honor.
