    Temple-Led Study Finds No Benefit in Taking Statin Drugs for Prevention of COPD Exacerbations

    A statin drug commonly used to lower cholesterol is not effective in reducing the number and severity of flare ups from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), according to the results of a large multicenter clinical trial designed and directed by Gerard J. Criner, MD, Director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.

    Temple University School of Medicine Celebrates 112th Commencement

    An abundance of umbrellas, smiles and "selfies" were the order of the day at Temple University School of Medicine's 112th commencement, held on May 16 at Philadelphia's ornate Academy of Music. The rain outside did nothing to dampen the spirit inside, as nearly 200 students celebrated their transition to life's "real challenge," as one student described their future careers.

    Temple's School of Medicine to be named for Trustee Lewis Katz

    Last fall, Trustee Lewis Katz, CST '63, surprised the Temple community by announcing a $25 million commitment to the university—the largest single pledge in Temple's history.
     
    Now Katz has announced where the funds are going: to support the educational and research mission of Temple's School of Medicine. In recognition of Katz's commitment and his lifetime of efforts on behalf of the university, Temple's Board of Trustees will name the university's School of Medicine for Katz.

    Temple's Cultural Competence in Healthcare Symposium Opens Diversity Dialogue

    “Does raising your voice help a patient who doesn’t speak English understand you? Well, no. They’re just wondering: Why are you yelling at me?”
     
    There are many more suitable ways to interact with patients who come from culturally diverse backgrounds, said Curtis Miyamoto, MD, Temple’s Chair of Radiation Oncology, during his keynote address at Temple University Health System’s second annual Cultural Competence in Healthcare Symposium.

    Portrait Honors Former Temple Surgery Chair Wallace P. Ritchie, Jr., MD, PhD

    “I wasn’t planning on becoming a surgeon – but after meeting Dr. Ritchie, I was sold,” said Michael Grabowski, MD, FACS, Chief of Physician Executive Surgery Services at Parkview Health, in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
     
    Grabowski was one of more than two dozen former students who came to Philadelphia last week to honor their mentor, Wallace P. Ritchie, Jr., MD, PhD, with the presentation of his portrait to the School of Medicine. Dr. Ritchie served as Chair of the Department of Surgery at Temple from 1984 to 1994.

    58 Temple Physicians Named "Top Doctors" by Philadelphia Magazine

    Fifty-eight (58) Temple physicians have been named to Philadelphia magazine’s “Top Doctors” list for 2014. Physicians on the list were nominated by their professional peers, and practice at Temple University Hospital, Fox Chase Cancer Center, and Jeanes Hospital.

    Raj Kishore, PhD, Named Director of Stem Cell Therapy Program at Temple's Center for Translational Medicine

    Raj Kishore, PhD, has been named Director of the Stem Cell Therapy Program in the Center of Translational Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine (TUSM). He has also been appointed Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine at TUSM.
