Research Interests
Dr. Choi’s laboratory studies vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) dedifferentiation and anastomotic neointimal hyperplasia (NH) and its relevance to atherosclerosis and early arteriovenous fistula failure in metabolic disease. We have developed a chronic kidney disease (CKD) CKD-atherosclerosis mouse model by performing the 5/6 nephrectomy and left common carotid ligation procedures in apoE-/- mice, which develops NH resembles CKD-atherosclerosis in human CKD. Dr. Choi uses blood and vessel samples from CKD and normal kidney patients requiring arteriovenous access surgery for hemodialysis at the Dialysis Access Center and patients admitted for blunt and penetrating operative cases requiring vascular reconstruction and bypass grafting, respectively at Temple University Hospital. Research approaches include molecular biology, immunological/cellular biology and pathophysiological approaches, microsurgery models, transgenic and gene knock-out mice.
