TUSM Forges Affiliation with Medical School in Taiwan

News August 25, 2014

Temple University School of Medicine (TUSM) has formalized a collaborative educational and research relationship with Taiwan’s Fu Jen Catholic University School of Medicine, the alma mater of TUSM benefactor and Temple University Board Member Dr. Solomon Luo.

A delegation from Fu Jen – including Kuo-Inn Tsou, MD, the school’s Dean; Ping-Keung Yip, MD, the school’s Chair; and Yu-Chu Huang, RN, PhD, Chair of Medicine International Affairs – joined Larry Kaiser, MD, FACS, Dean & CEO of Temple Health; Arthur Feldman, MD, PhD, Chief Academic Officer of Temple University Health System and Executive Dean of Temple University School of Medicine; Solomon Luo, MD; and several TUSM Deans and Chairs in the MERB on July 11 at a signing ceremony for the new affiliation, followed by a tour of TUSM’s various programs and facilities.

“Our affiliation with Fu Jen will expand our graduate student pool with some talented budding researchers, while also putting Temple on the map in Taiwan and spreading our reputation in Asian markets,” said Dr. Kaiser.

The five-year agreement reserves up to four MD-PhD program slots per year at TUSM for Fu Jen students, who will finish their pre-clinical courses at Fu Jen, come to Temple under a tuition waiver for three to four years to do their PhD thesis research, then go back to Fu Jen to complete their studies and earn their MD from Fu Jen, and PhD from Temple, simultaneously.

The agreement also includes a medical student exchange program for up to six students per year at each institution, in which Fu Jen and Temple students who finish their basic third year clerkships can do clinical clerkship electives (up to three months/three electives) at the two institutions. Tuition is waived and the students are responsible for transportation and living expenses.

TUSM forged a similar partnership last year with Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and its associated Renji Hospital, one of the largest teaching hospitals in Shanghai, China.
