Temple's John Daly, MD, FACS, FRCSI (Hon), Elected Vice President of Nation's Oldest Surgical Organization

John M. Daly, MD, FACS, FRCSI (Hon), Harry C. Donahoo Professor of Surgery, Surgical Director of the William Maul Measey Institute for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety, and Emeritus Dean of the Temple University School of Medicine, has been elected Vice President of the American Surgical Association (ASA). Dr. Daly was elected to the position on April 11 during the Association's 134th Annual Meeting in Boston.
 
"I am honored to be selected for this position in an organization with the history, prestige and influence of the American Surgical Association," said Dr. Daly. "I look forward to working with the other members of the Association to help further advance all surgeons' capabilities, the quality of patient care and surgical education in this country."
 
Dr. Daly's term began on April 12, 2014, and runs through April 24, 2015. In his role as Vice President, he will serve on the ASA Council, the organization's governing body. The Council makes internal business decisions for the ASA and issues policy statements on behalf of the Association regarding national issues of importance in surgery and surgical training. As Vice President, Dr. Daly will also be responsible for introducing the ASA President at the 2015 Annual Meeting.
 
A former Vice President of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Daly is an internationally recognized oncologic surgeon, author, researcher and educator. His areas of expertise include surgical oncology involving management of patients with breast and GI cancers, research involving tumor immunology, physician competency and liability, credentialing and Board certification, and surgical education. Dr. Daly has hundreds of peer-reviewed publications to his credit and has received more than $20 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health.
 
Established in 1880, the ASA is the oldest and most prestigious surgical association in the United States. Its members include the nation's most prominent surgeons, as well as leading surgeons from around the world.
