Michael Edwards, MD, FACS, Named Chief of General and Minimally Invasive Surgery and Director of Bariatric Surgery at Temple

Michael A. Edwards, MD, FACS, has been appointed Chief of General and Minimally Invasive Surgery and Director of Bariatric Surgery at Temple University Hospital, and Associate Professor of Surgery at Temple University School of Medicine, effective April 1, 2014.
 
Dr. Edwards is coming to Temple from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine at Georgia Regents University in Augusta, GA. While at the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, he held several titles including Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief of Minimally Invasive and Digestive Diseases Surgery.

Dr. Edwards specializes in a wide range of minimally invasive surgeries, including bariatric surgery; foregut surgery; adrenal surgery; splenectomy; distal pancreatectomy; colorectal surgery for cancer and benign disease; simple and complex abdominal wall hernias; and single incision laparoscopic surgery.

"Dr. Edwards is a nationally recognized clinician, educator and researcher, and his arrival at Temple will allow us to expand the surgical options we are able to offer our patients."
 
Dr. Edwards' research interests include weight loss surgery outcomes and translational research; minimally invasive surgery techniques; translational research focusing on adrenal disorders; and surgical education.
 
Board-Certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, Dr. Edwards earned his Medical Degree at George Washington University School of Medicine. He also completed both a General Surgery Internship and Residency at George Washington. He went on to complete a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University School of Medicine, and a Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School.
 
Dr. Edwards is a frequent presenter at international and national meetings and is the author of many peer-reviewed articles, abstracts and textbook chapters. He has served as a reviewer for several national and international scientific journals. Dr. Edwards is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Critical Care Medicine, the American Medical Association, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
 
Married with three daughters, Dr. Edwards is eager to experience all that Philadelphia has to offer, especially exploring the arts and taking advantage of opportunities to engage in community activities.
