Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program

Temple University Hospital’s three-year Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship is one of the most rigorous, varied and sought-after pulmonary training programs in the nation. At Temple, trainees will find a program that truly lives its tripartite mission of patient care, research and education. Program graduates leave Temple well-trained in the latest procedures and technology and confident in their ability to practice in the environment of their choice.

Notable aspects of Temple’s Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship include:

  • Over 35 faculty members who are dedicated educators and well-respected clinicians.
  • A commitment to uninterrupted time for scholarly pursuits, research and writing – a commitment backed up by a reduction in clinical hours and an increase in the number of fellows.
  • Faculty members who have a deep pride in working at Temple and upholding the hospital’s 125-year history advancing healthcare through research, education and clinical care.
  • An established leadership team led by department chair Gerard Criner, MD, and program director Maria Elena Vega Sanchez, MD
  • One of the nation’s largest pulmonary and critical care training programs with 28 fellows.
  • A large, diverse and complex patient population.
  • A significant number of advanced lung disease patients evaluated for medical as well as surgical treatment options.
  • A high-volume of procedures, including over 1,500 interventional pulmonary procedures, 7,000 pulmonary function tests, and 2,500 sleep studies.
  • A lung transplant program that ranks in the top five in the nation, based on volume.
  • A program at the forefront of life-saving technology, including extracorporeal life support (ECLS), advanced bronchoscopy and bedside ultrasound.
  • One of the country’s most active and well-funded clinical trials programs, with an emphasis on COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary vascular disease and asthma.

All Temple pulmonary fellows immerse themselves in research that focuses on the epidemiology, treatment, outcomes and pathophysiology of lung disease. The integration of research with patient care assures proper training and prepares graduating fellows for careers in either academic medicine or private practice.
