Welcome to the Section of Nephrology at Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Hospital. Kidney disease affects over 20 million Americans and millions more are at risk for developing this disease in the future. Certain ethnic and racial populations, such as African Americans and Hispanics/Latinos, are more likely to develop chronic kidney disease. On a personal level, I have witnessed the effects of chronic kidney disease among my own relatives. Over decades, physicians and scientists have made great strides in understanding and managing kidney disease. However, with recent discoveries and technological advances, we have even greater potential to improve therapies and benefit patients.
With the ultimate goals of kidney disease prevention and treatment, the Section of Nephrology is dedicated to the tri-fold mission of excellence in patient care, education and research. Currently, we are expanding our programs to meet the growing needs of our community, locally and globally. Central to our tri-fold mission, we are building a Comprehensive Kidney Disease Program which offers a variety of services and multi-specialty consultation, for optimal care and convenience for patients. In addition, we are expanding our educational programs beyond the School of Medicine to community practitioners to keep physicians and their patients updated on the management of kidney disease. Those programs will be well-advertised and appear here on our web site. Our research program continues to expand with involvement in federally-funded national and international clinical observational and interventional trials aimed to provide more effective treatments. In the highly collaborative academic environment at Temple, our faculty and fellows are engaged in research with various departments, institutes, centers, and schools. In my leadership role in the new Center for Urban Bioethics, we have additional opportunities for collaboration and innovative research, extending across campuses, to explore health disparities in kidney disease.
