David Myers, MD Professor and Chair, Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery 

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Temple University is poised as one of the exceptional otolaryngology programs in our country.  The Department is steeped in history dating back to the early 1900’s when Dr. Chevalier Jackson emerged as the “father of endoscopy”, pioneering the field of laryngology to include foreign body removal.  Dr. David Myers continued the groundbreaking advancements with the introduction of audiology research and formal otolaryngology residency training.

This innovative spirit, dedication to clinical excellence, commitment to teaching, and pursuit of knowledge continues in the Department today.  Our faculty spans the entire depth and breadth of the field to include head and neck surgery, laryngology, otology, neurotology, skull base surgery, rhinology, allergy, sleep medicine, facial plastics & reconstructive surgery as well as pediatric otolaryngology. Many are recognized as national and international experts in their respective subspecialty.  Together we provide personalized, compassionate, and cutting-edge care in a multi-disciplinary fashion to patients and their families. 

The Temple Otolaryngology Department excels in education at all levels- from medical students and residents to physician assistants and audiology externs.  The residency program provides a comprehensive curriculum to include a robust surgical load, experience in both the academic and private practice setting, Patient Safety Certification through the Institute of Healthcare Improvement, and humanitarian efforts to Ethiopia. 

Clinical and basic science research is a core component of our Department.  Residents and faculty are actively engaged in research which is presented at local, national and international meetings.  Our diverse patient population and ability to serve North Philadelphia provides a unique opportunity to conduct impactful research related to defining otolaryngology specific quality metrics, best clinical practice, and disparity research.
