World-Class Research. Strong Clinical Collaboration. Life-Changing Impact.
As a postdoctoral fellow at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, you will train in a nationally recognized research environment where discovery and clinical impact go hand in hand. The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education lists Temple University as an R1 institution for “highest research activity.” Katz offers exceptional mentorship, advanced research facilities, and close collaboration with clinicians, creating unparalleled opportunities for early-career scientists.
A Leading Center for Biomedical Research
The Lewis Katz School of Medicine is one of the nation’s most active medical research institutions, where investigators advance basic, translational, and clinical research to better understand disease and develop strategies to improve human health.
Our scientists conduct research across cancer biology, cardiovascular science, neuroscience, immunology, HIV research, pulmonary disease, pharmacology, substance use disorder research, and many other areas. This work is supported through a collaborative structure of discipline-focused departments and disease-centered research programs that encourage cross-disciplinary discovery.
Basic research is organized across eight discipline-focused departments:
Biomedical Education and Data Science
Cancer and Cellular Biology
Cardiovascular Sciences
Medical Genetics and Molecular Biochemistry
Microbiology, Immunology, and Inflammation
Neural Sciences
Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Urban Health and Population Science
These departments are supported by 15 disease-focused research centers embedded within a matrix structure that encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration. Katz investigators are recognized nationally and internationally, with research programs primarily funded by the National Institutes of Health.

A Unique Environment for Translational Research
A defining feature of training at Katz is the physical and academic proximity to Temple University Hospital, located directly across the street from the medical school.
Katz faculty in 20 clinical departments provide care at Temple University Hospital, Pennsylvania’s leading safety-net provider and a nationally respected academic medical center serving North Philadelphia for more than 125 years. This proximity creates daily opportunities for collaboration between laboratory scientists and clinicians.
The Katz biobank provides de-identified patient samples that directly enhance translational research. Clinical trials initiated by Katz investigators by external partners also generate patient data and specimens that inform laboratory discovery.
This environment enables true bench-to-bedside research and offers postdocs meaningful exposure to clinical application of scientific discovery.
State-of-the-Art Research Facilities & Core Services
Most Katz laboratories are housed within a 480,000-square-foot, 11-story Medical Education and Research Building designed to promote investigator-trainee interaction and interdisciplinary collaboration through open laboratory space.
Katz provides centralized Core Facilities equipped with advanced instrumentation and expertise, including:
Flow Cytometry
Single Cell Multiomics
Metabolomics and Lipidomics
Bioimaging
Biobank
Laboratory Animal Services
These shared resources are available to all departments and enable postdoctoral fellows to conduct high-impact, technically advanced research.
