The Center for Substance Abuse Research (CSAR) is dedicated to understanding the biological basis of addiction and substance use disorders. Our research spans the mechanisms of drug action, neural circuits, addiction treatment strategies, and the impact of substance use on health. By investigating opioids, cannabinoids, stimulants, and alcohol, we aim to develop new therapies and interventions to reduce addiction and its consequences.
At CSAR, we understand that substance use disorders are a public health challenge requiring collective changemakers—scientists, physicians, and community advocates working together. CSAR is home to over 30 faculty members with primary appointments in 11 different departments across the School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, and College of Liberal Arts. Our investigators utilize multidisciplinary approaches, including molecular biology, genetics, neuroscience, and behavioral science, to advance the understanding of addiction and drug interactions.
