Academic Program

Orientation

During the first 2 weeks at Temple, residents complete hospital orientation as well as attend the Wills Eye Ophthalmic Orientation Course which is protected time. This is a primer on a wide variety of topics to prepare our residents for starting clinical duties which are gradually introduced.

Didactics

Our didactics include dedicated lecture time for all residents regardless of site rotation, on every Tuesday for a half day, as well as every fourth Friday afternoon. During this time residents will receive lectures from various faculty members moving through the curriculum as well as guest speakers. Grand rounds are held every 2nd and 4th Tuesday which are broadcasted to satellite sites. There are additional weekly lectures given at individual sites.

Journal Club

Several journal clubs are sponsored by a faculty member throughout the year and traditionally held in the evening either at a restaurant or a faculty member’s home. With social distancing, we have switched to a Zoom format but continued the vital academic tradition.

Conferences

The hospital provides a stipend towards conferences. The ophthalmology department also sponsors residents who need to present in addition to ensuring all PGY-3s attend a surgical cataract course and senior residents attend both Academy and the Osher Cataract Course. Additionally Temple holds an annual Alumni Conference with an additional resident focused lecture.

Research

Basic science and/or clinical research is encouraged. A quality improvement project is required of all residents for graduation. Presentation of research papers and posters at local, regional and national meetings is supported by the department and Graduate Medical Education Office.
