Advanced Skills in the Culture and Practice of Medicine

Doctoring 2 is taught throughout the second year of medical school, and further develops the concepts introduced in Doctoring 1. History-taking and physical examination techniques are reviewed in a 3-week refresher course. Presentation skills and write-ups are practiced and refined with preceptors in small group discussions. Students are brought into the hospital and into outpatient clinics where they perform complete assessments of patients with diverse medical issues. Clinical reasoning, diagnostic skills, and patient management approaches are taught and refined using standardized patient scenarios and actual patients’ medical problems. Clinical simulations in small group settings are used to explore special topics in physician-patient interactions. The course culminates in a multi-station OSCE. 

Block 7 – Microbiology & Infectious Disease

Block 7 focuses on the basic principles of infectious diseases including microbial pathogenesis, relevant host defense mechanisms, epidemiological principles, types of diagnostic approaches, and therapies designed to prevent or treat infectious diseases. Cases are used to identify the causative agent of specific diseases, including differential diagnosis, identification of appropriate diagnostic tests to confirm the diagnosis and development of treatment strategies. These cases also serve to review basic bacteriology and highlight interplay of pathogens with the microbiota covered as horizontal curriculum during the first year.

Block 8 – Diseases of the Cardiovascular, Respiratory & Renal Systems

Block 8 assists second year medical students in learning the basics of pathologic, pharmacologic and pathophysiologic aspects of the diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal systems. Students will be able to recognize the differences between normal and disease states, have a basic knowledge of the tests available to diagnose each disease, and the pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies used to treat each disease. The block is designed to provide the foundational knowledge that will make it possible for the students to learn from and care for their future patients.

Block 9 – Diseases of the Endocrine, Reproductive & Gastrointestinal Systems

This course covers the pathophysiology, pathology and pharmacology of the Endocrine, Reproductive and Gastro-intestinal systems. Building on knowledge of the normal systems from Year 1, the Block is designed to provide students with knowledge of the etiology, pathology, management and treatment of diseases of these organ systems, including demographics and discussion of health awareness. Course content is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops and discussion of clinical cases in team-based activities.

Block 10 – Diseases of the Nervous System

This course covers the basic pathology, pharmacology, and pathophysiology of the nervous system, eye and ear, as well as the topic of drugs of abuse. The block will be taught by faculty from the Departments of Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neuroscience, Psychiatry, Pharmacology, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, and Pathology. By the end of the block, students should be able to describe the pathology and, when known, the pathophysiological mechanisms of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems, including psychiatric disorders, and disorders of the eye, ear, nose and throat. Topics include infectious, inflammatory and immunological disorders, neuronal damage caused by trauma, as well as stroke, seizure, vascular, neoplastic, and degenerative disorders; and the etiology and treatment of behavioral and psychiatric disorders. Students should also be able to recognize the differences between the normal and disease states, tests available to diagnose the diseases, the pharmacology of drugs used in the treatment of each disease, and non-pharmacological therapies. The block uses lectures and assigned readings to present material. Workshops, including Clinical Reasoning Conferences, and problem solving sessions are used to teach and reinforce key concepts.

Block 11 – Hematology & Oncology, Diseases of the Musculoskeletal & Immune Systems, Dermatology

This course covers the pathophysiology, pathology and pharmacology of all aspects of hematology including anemias, platelet disorders, clotting disorders, transfusion medicine and hematological cancers with participation of faculty from Temple University Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center. The second half of the Block covers Musculoskeletal diseases including Rheumatological diseases, diseases of muscle and nerve, disease of skin and bone, and includes lectures and reviews of orthopedic protocols for bone and nerve injury. Course content is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops and discussion of clinical cases in team-based activities.
