The goal of research in the Department of Physiology is to advance knowledge of the function of the body under normal conditions and during disease states, and to develop therapeutic modalities for the treatment of disease. The approaches taken extend from studies at the molecular level, through studies of cellular function and studies of organ system function to clinical investigations. The major areas of research focus include investigations of the function of platelets and cellular components of the blood, vascular biology, inflammation, autoimmune disease (e.g. arthritis and multiple sclerosis), neuroimmunology, heart failure, progenitor cells, pulmonary function and delivery of therapeutic agents through the lungs, stroke, spinal cord injury, and head injury. Members of the faculty are also actively engaged in research projects directed at developing novel ways to educate students in the area of physiology.
