How do I apply?
Applications are only made to the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program using BioMedCAS.
What are the admission requirements?
A baccalaureate degree or its equivalent, as recognized by Temple University, from an accredited post-secondary institution is required. The minimum undergraduate GPA for admission, as required by the Temple University Graduate School, is 3.0. There is no requirement for standardized test scores. International applicants who have not graduated from a US or Canadian institution or attended a school whose sole language of instruction was not English must have a minimum internet based TOEFL score of 79 OR an IELTS of at least 6.5 OR Duolingo of at least 110.
Are there any academic requirements for admission?
It is recommended that students have completed Biology, General and Organic Chemistry and Calculus, often along with additional advanced science courses. Independent research experience, either as a full-time technician or during the summer, is strongly considered.
Do I need to identify a thesis advisor prior to applying?
No. During the first year in the program, all students complete three 12-week rotations with any graduate faculty member either at LKSOM or the Fox Chase Cancer Center. Students then select their advisor and begin their research project by June 1.
Can I apply for either fall or spring admission?
The Biomedical Sciences program only admits students to the fall semester.
Can I attend as a part-time student?
The Biomedical Sciences program requires full-time matriculation. Classes are held daily with no evening, weekend or on-line courses. Approved students may take up to 9 credits of continuing education coursework during regular business hours.
Are transfer students accepted?
Students meeting the requirements for admission who have attended an accredited graduate program may apply for admission through BioMedCAS. Students may only matriculate in the fall semester. Advance standing may be awarded to students based upon the equivalency of courses completed and the grade received. The decision on the number of credits accepted is made by the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies on a case-by-case basis and consistent with Temple University Graduate School policy.
Do I have to teach?
There are no TA requirements or obligations.
How long does it take to graduate?
Master’s degrees can be completed in 2 years with full-time matriculation, while our PhD students usually complete their degree within 5 to 6 years. Temple University has a 7-year time limit for completion of the PhD degree.
How are students funded?
All PhD students receive a competitive annual stipend, health insurance and full tuition remission. The Masters degree is entirely self-funded there are no scholarships or assistantships available.
