A Showcase Of Talent: The Department Of Medicine's 2014 Research Forum

News June 13, 2014

The Department of Medicine showcased the talent of its young physicians at the 2014 Sol Sherry Fellows and Residents Research Symposium – held on June 11, in Temple University School of Medicine's (TUSM) Medical Education and Research Building (MERB).

The symposium featured poster and oral presentations representing a wide variety of ongoing clinical and translational research projects. Presenters and faculty exchanged insights and enjoyed stimulating discussions about their research interests at the forum, which is named in honor of former TUSM Dean and Department of Medicine Chair Sol Sherry, MD (1916-1993). Oral and poster presentations were judged by Department of Medicine faculty, and the best received Sol Sherry Awards for Excellence in Research.

"This year's 58 presentations reflect the wide range of research interests within the Department of Medicine and demonstrate that the quality of that research remains high. It is truly an inspiring event," added A. Koneti Rao, MD, Sol Sherry Professor of Medicine; Professor, Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center and Pharmacology; Director, Benign Hematology, Hemostasis and Thrombosis; and Co-Director, Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center – who has been organizing the annual showcase almost since its inception.

"This symposium has been an annual tradition for more than 30 years, and gives our youngest colleagues the opportunity to share their research insights with peers and faculty across the various subspecialties in the Department of Medicine," said Henry Parkman, MD, Professor of Medicine and Director of Temple's GI Motility Laboratory, who chaired the Residents' oral presentations at the symposium.

Dr. Rao, a faculty member at TUSM since 1979, was presented at this year's event with the 2014 Distinguished Scientist Award, for his major contributions in the areas of hemostasis and thrombosis. He delivered a lecture at the symposium summarizing his research into the molecular and genetic mechanisms of inherited disorders of platelet function and human deficiencies in key platelet signaling proteins, and vascular diseases. Dr. Rao has served in several leadership positions at TUSM – including Associate Dean for the Temple MD-PhD program (2001-2005), Director of the Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center (2005-2011), and the Chief of Hematology section (2005-2013).

"It's a tremendous honor to be recognized by peers at one's own institution," said Dr. Rao. "The Department of Medicine and Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center have been my home ever since I started my professional career. I am grateful to the members of my laboratory and for the rewarding collaborations I have had, over the span of many years, with many colleagues at Temple and outside," he added.
