Residency Program

Our Mission:

The Temple University General Surgery Residency Program strives to prepare surgeons to provide high quality care that benefits their patients and community. We accomplish this purpose by offering residents training in the technical and non-technical skills required to care for our patient’s physical, psychological, emotional and social needs. We also provide professional development to our residents aimed at advancing the field of surgery through education, advocacy and research. Aligned with the institutional mission, we aim to attract residents and faculty of diverse backgrounds that are representative of the community in Philadelphia in which we serve. We approach our work with integrity, kindness, curiosity and accountability.

Thank you for your interest in the general surgery residency program at Temple University Hospital! A career in general surgery or one of its subspecialties is incredibly rewarding and we are excited that you have taken the first steps in joining this exciting profession.

We are extremely proud of our residency program and the graduates produced. Temple general surgery residents are a diverse group of individuals, but have a common thread of commitment to their patients, their education, and to each other. Through a combination of operative experience, clinical service, didactics and simulation, our residents complete their training as competent and caring surgeons that are competitive applicants for fellowship or have the ability to go directly into clinical practice.

The Department of Surgery is dedicated to the  residency and each of its residents. The education of residents is at the forefront of every Temple Surgery initiative and we deeply care about our residents training and well-being. We take immense pride in our mission to serve our patients, our community, andall our learners.

The Temple Surgery faculty provide extraordinarily strong clinical teaching in general surgery and its subspecialties. They come from varying backgrounds, training and areas of expertise to provide our trainees with a broad education in general surgery. They are committed to patient care excellence, surgical education, research and service.

All who train at Temple become a part of the “Temple Surgery Family.”  The culture of the Department of Surgery is set by its leadership and is one of caring, compassion, respect and understanding of the needs of our patients and each other. We work as a team to ensure the well-being of everyone within the department and are all here to help each other in times of challenge.  As you embark on your journey to find a residency program, we hope that you will consider Temple and all it has to offer.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at Kiesba.Herrin@tuhs.temple.edu.
