Message from Chief Residents

Thank you for your interest in the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at Temple University Hospital (TUH). We hope that you find this website informative.

As a tertiary hospital with one of the busiest Level I trauma centers in Philadelphia, TUH is regularly host to a myriad of pathology, providing our residents with the exposure and training needed for a career in radiology. Through the Fox Chase Cancer Center, a nationally recognized comprehensive cancer center and member of the Temple University Health System, our residents get additional exposure to high-level cancer diagnoses, intervention, and research. Furthermore, as the nation's leader in lung transplant, we see intricate lung pathology on a regular basis, positively influencing our overall educational experience. Finally, because our program does not have diagnostic fellows, the residents get first line exposure and access to all of the cases, complications, and learning that come through the department.

The faculty and senior residents collaborate yearly to develop and implement an introductory curriculum to ensure that the transition into radiology residency is as smooth as possible for each new resident. As the resident progresses through the program, the resident is granted more responsibility in terms of reading more complicated cases and teaching the newer residents. Eventually, our residency trains its trainees to become independent, and to pursue multiple electives and mini-fellowships to tailor our individual experiences. This system has allowed for extremely competitive fellowship match results across the nation into multiple subspecialties. Furthermore, integration of both a structured physics curriculum and multispecialty board review lecture series ensures that Temple residents are prepared for board examinations. Accordingly, Temple boasts one of the most impressive pass rates on the CORE exam in the nation.

We have worked hard to create a supportive culture at Temple, and as such we prioritize establishing camaraderie and collegiality among our residents. In the reading room, this translates to an atmosphere in which residents are encouraged to ask questions and senior residents and faculty are eager to engage in a discussion. Outside of work, our residents organize fantasy football leagues, play video games, and enjoy happy hours, among other activities.

Philadelphia is an exciting area to train in radiology, as it is a world-renowned center for medicine and scientific research. There are multiple opportunities to participate in social and academic sessions with our counterparts from other radiology programs throughout the city and region. The Philadelphia Roentgen Ray Society is among the oldest radiology societies in the United States and meets regularly for events ranging from lectures, dinners, trivia, and "College Bowl" radiology competitions.

The location of our main hospital is accessible to those living in Center City or numerous surrounding neighborhoods, allowing our residents to pursue their own style of living. Active nightlife and a variety of weekend activities abound. The Philadelphia restaurant scene is unsurpassed. Being situated between DC and NYC, Philly hosts most national touring artists going up the east coast, so there’s never a shortage of live music. We have multiple competitive major sports teams that call our city home. Philadelphia offers everything one would expect from a large metropolitan area, but has the unique advantage of being relatively walkable and affordable.

We look forward to receiving your application to the Temple University Hospital Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact any one of us.
