Interview Committee
Dr. Mian AhmadAn attending, loved by all the residents for his wit, patience, and wise encouragement. He joined us from Hahnemann University Hospital where he completed his residency and served as faculty for a long time. Dr. Ahmad is a cherished resource who helps us master the fundamentals of anesthesia, airway management, pharmacology, and navigation of practical clinical scenarios with problem-based learning discussions.
Dr. Sean Baskin
An enthusiastic cardiac anesthesiologist and intensivist who just recently joined our department after completing fellowships in cardiac anesthesia and critical care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. His academic interests are 3-D echo and mechanical circulatory support. Dr. Baskin is passionate about echocardiography and resident education and looks forward to teaching the residents and fellows transthoracic and transesophageal echo. His strong procedural background is a great addition to our department and we’re excited to have him join us!
Dr. Vincent CowellVice Chair of Clinical Operations of our hospital and a fierce advocate for resident development, Dr. Cowell has earned much esteem (and several awards) for teaching and leadership in the institutional, state and national arenas. He is an exemplary leader and always makes time to offer sound judgement, objective guidance and advice. Dr. Cowell is an outstanding clinician who practiced cardiac, thoracic, obstetric and general anesthesia for many years and is now also responsible for much of the administrative arm of the department’s functions.
Dr. Eric DeveauxDr. Deveaux completed his medical education at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and residency training at Stony Brook University Hospital. He worked in private practice for five years in a multitude of work settings prior to joining us at the Temple North Campus where is functions as our co-director of regional anesthesia. He presently resides in Montgomery County with his wife and two daughters.
Dr. Shelley GeorgeOur Associate Program Director! Dr. George recently joined our department from Hahnemann University Hospital where she served a long tenure after completing her fellowship in regional anesthesiology and acute pain. From day one, Dr. George has been seeking resident interests, actively involved in curriculum development, resident recruitment and fellowship decision guidance. We are thrilled to have her serve in this new capacity. She keeps us focused and continually offers words of encouragement.
Dr. Amanda HargroveAn incredibly skillful, experienced clinician, Dr. Hargrove works out of the Temple North campus. Dr. Hargrove has practiced in both academic and private settings prior to joining back with the Temple family. She graduated medical school from Drexel University and then went on to complete anesthesiology residency training at Hahnemann University. She is always willing to give residents career advice, and her calm nature makes her a delight to work with in the operating room!
Dr. Gregory HertelOne of our newer faculty members, Dr. Hertel is known for his calm and patient demeanor and quickly becoming a favorite attending amongst the residents. Dr. Hertel completed his residency at the University of Pennsylvania then spent a few years in private practice before recently joining us at Temple University. Dr. Hertel works in a variety of locations including our main operating rooms and labor and delivery. He is a thoughtful anesthesiologist and a constant advocate for our residents’ education. We look forward to doing more cases with Dr. Hertel and learning from him.
Dr. Michael KereszturyA former Temple anesthesia chief resident and a bastion of the institution, Dr. Keresztury is dedicated to resident education and our development as excellent anesthesiologists. He practiced cardiac anesthesia for an extensive time and continues to mentor us during major thoracic anesthesia cases, liver transplants, difficult airway management scenarios and trauma emergency anesthesia care. Dr. Keresztury never fails to go the extra mile to ensure we are well-equipped to succeed in our chosen career.
Dr. Jon LivelsbergerHe’s recently won awards for resident mentorship and teaching. Dr. Livelsberger is Temple-trained and went on to complete a fellowship in Regional Anesthesia at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He spearheads the neurosurgical and orthopedic anesthesia services and is well-known amongst the residents for oral-board review questions, impromptu problem-based learning discussions and promotion of critical-thinking.
Dr. Flore MacenatA brilliant, compassionate, and skillful anesthesiologist, Dr. Macenat completed her residency and pain medicine fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania. She has worked in both the private and academic settings, and has found that she is the most fulfilled by teaching. She brings a wealth of experience with caring for critically ill patients, performing regional blocks for orthopedic surgeries, and navigating life as an anesthesiologist mom.
Dr. Stephen McCaughanDr. McCaughan is a wonderful academic and practical teacher and pain medicine physician. He serves in both the general operating rooms and as the Director of Regional Anesthesia and Associate Director of Chronic Pain. He completed a chronic pain fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and after spending some time in private practice, Dr. McCaughan returned to Temple to pursue an academic career. He has made his home here and is respected and much appreciated by the residents and patients.
Dr. Daniella MieleA resourceful anesthesiologist who always thinks out-of-the-box. She is a great listener and an outstanding teacher who has extensive experience with regional anesthesia, team-building and resident mentorship. She serves in various roles in program evaluation and development, where we draw on her balanced and objective approach to problem-solving. She completed her anesthesiology residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and has been with our department for several years. She is excited to serve as one of the Assistant Program Directors for the residency program.
Dr. Richard MonthOur fearless leader and Program Director attended medical school at the University of Miami and completed his anesthesiology residency at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. From there, he went on to complete a fellowship in obstetric anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is dedicated to the wellbeing of the residents and to training excellent anesthesiologists.
Dr. David PaulDr. Paul completed his residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital after graduating from Vassar College with a degree in Sociology and the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. After many years of practice in the community, he recently joined Temple. He is a member of the Blood Transfusion Committee. He is enjoying his experience with residents and teaching the practical aspects of anesthesiology.
Dr. Jack Peace
An attending known for his dedication to resident education and practical solutions, his problem-solving skills help to keep us on our toes! Dr. Peace attended the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He joins us from Northwestern University, where he completed his anesthesiology residency and fellowship in obstetric anesthesiology. He has helped broaden our teaching exposures, both in the main ORs and in the very dynamic world of obstetric care. He’s a great resource for us all, pushing us to do our best. He is excited to assume the role of Associate Program Director for the residency program.
Dr. Daniel PultonDr. Pulton is a new addition to the Temple Department of Anesthesiology, having recently graduated from anesthesiology residency and Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship across town at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to becoming an honorary Philadelphian, Dr. Pulton graduated from Brandeis University with a major in Health: Science, Society and Policy and a minor in Theater Arts, and completed her medical degree at the University of Connecticut. She strives to bring humanism and empathy to the practice of medicine every day, and feels the most gratified after a day of teaching fellows, resident and students at the bedside. She is excited to serve as one of the Assistant Program Directors for the residency program.
Dr. Yuliana Salamanca-Padilla
A vibrant cardiothoracic anesthesiologist who wears many hats. She completed her residency at our institution and left briefly to pursue her Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship at Penn State University. She has since returned and continues to work closely with residents, continually seeking our feedback and working on curriculum improvement. She is also the Program Director for our Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship and recruits amazing fellows each year!
Dr. Larissa SalasAn energetic, always friendly but fierce advocate for resident productivity, wellness and holistic development. She is one of our critical care anesthesiologists with whom we have the pleasure of working both in ICU and OR settings. Dr. Salas joined us after completing her anesthesiology residency at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Detroit Medical Center, followed by a Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic and she overflows with words of wisdom. She brings a wealth of experience with difficult intubations, critically ill respiratory and cardiac failure patients, and the perioperative care of cardiac surgery patients and liver transplant patients!
Dr. Scott SchartelDr. Schartel is a seasoned, extremely patient and knowledgeable attending, well-liked amongst the residents. He completed a Cardiothoracic Anesthesia fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic and has received several teaching awards during his tenure here. Dr. Schartel is an experienced ABA Oral Board Examiner and is currently president of the Inter-Hospital Study Group for Anesthesia Education, the group that produces the Anesthesia Knowledge Test series used by residency programs in the US and Canada. He is a past president of the Society of Education in Anesthesia and remains actively involved in curriculum improvement on institutional and national levels. Dr. Schartel oversees our thoracic anesthesia rotation.
Dr. Anish SethiDr. Sethi is an ever-cheerful, down-to-earth attending, who trained in chronic pain at Thomas Jefferson University and who has helped enhance our experience in this field of study. He is always teaching us to master various interventions of this rapidly evolving subspecialty, when not helping us hone our general anesthesia skills in the OR. He also serves as the department Vice Chair of Clinical Research and is actively involved in recruiting residents for quality improvement and other studies.
Dr. Felipe SueroDr. Suero completed his medical training in Spain before finishing residency in thoracic surgery and worked several years as an attending. After that, he came to this country and completed his anesthesia training at the Cleveland Clinic. He has been working in a number of different positions for twenty years, mainly in private practice. Five years ago, he joined the Temple University Hospital System and is now the chief of Temple North.
