Service Learning Trips - Bolivia 2008
On March 24, 2008 we left Philadelphia for our first international service learning trip — to Bolivia! We spent the next week trekking to camps of people displaced by flooding in the region around Santa Cruz. Setting up a small portable clinic in whatever space was available, we provided medical and humanitarian aid to about 1,000 Bolivian citizens affected by 5 months of flooding. We treated a variety of ID issues, stress/PTSD related complaints, sanitation and malnutrition-related illness. We also carried out mass dispensation of mebendazole, vitamins, and held water purification clinics. In order to reach the areas of greatest need, we collaborated with Bolivian public health officials in Santa Cruz. Towns visited included: El Puente, Los Troncos, and San Ramon. We collaborated with the Prefectura de Santa Cruz.
