Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University Honors Distinguished Alumni

A recognized authority on sports medicine radiology, a member of the first successful heart transplant team in the United States and the designer of an app that teaches adolescent girls about sexual education were among the seven alumni honored by the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University for their achievements and service.
The awards ceremony took place at the annual Reunion Signature Dinner on May 6, 2017, hosted at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. Presenting this year’s awards were Larry R. Kaiser, MD, FACS, the Lewis Katz Dean at the School of Medicine, President and CEO of Temple University Health System, and Senior Executive Vice President for Health Affairs for Temple University, and Mike Zheng MED ’17, President of the Student Government Association at the Katz School of Medicine.
Introducing the awardees, Dr. Kaiser remarked “We honor these alumni for their commitment to the Temple values of hard work, dedication, and a passion for helping others in everything they do. They represent on a daily basis what it means to be a graduate of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University.”
The following are descriptions of the award recipients’ accomplishments and service:
The Paige M. and Henry P. Laughlin Alumna of the Year Award, given in recognition of outstanding contributions to medicine: Helene Pavlov, CLA ’68, MD, FACR ’72
Dr. Pavlov, radiologist-in-chief emeritus at Hospital for Special Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University is an authority on sports medicine radiology who has been in the forefront of her field for decades. She has published over 100 investigative original research articles, 62 book chapters and review articles and has displayed over 36 exhibits at national radiologic and orthopedic scientific assemblies.
The Alumni Achievement Award, honoring an individual who represents the ideal Temple medical graduate: Gerald M. Lemole, MD ’62.
Dr. Lemole has forged a career full of firsts. A member of the surgical team that performed the first successful heart transplant in the United States, he performed the first coronary bypass in the tristate area and the first open heart operation in the state of Delaware. Dr. Lemole currently serves as an adjunct professor of surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine.
The Alumni Achievement Award, honoring an individual who represents the ideal Temple medical graduate: David S. Wilkes, MD ’82
Dr. Wilkes is the co-founder and chief scientific officer of Immuneworks, a biotech company which develops treatments for immune-mediated lung disease. He has made significant contributions to research and medical advances, co-authoring more than 100 research papers and holding six US patents. Dr. Wilkes currently serves as dean of the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
The Alumni Service Award, honoring exemplary generosity to the Katz School of Medicine: Paul Hermany, MD ’82
Dr. Hermany is the medical director of the Heart Station and chief of cardiology at Grand View Hospital. He currently serves as an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine and served as president of the Temple’s Medical Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2005 to 2008.
The Alumni Service Award, honoring exemplary generosity to the Katz School of Medicine: Paul L. Weidner, MD ’82
Dr. Weidner, medical director of the Joint Replacement Center at Grand View Hospital, is a member of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine’s Board of Visitors, a past president and current member of Temple’s Medical Alumni Association Board of Directors, and a past president of the Temple Shriners Orthopaedic Alumni Association.
The Honored Professor Award, honoring a professor whose teaching style and character exemplify the knowledge and values that Temple strives to instill: Stephen Permut, MD ’72
Dr. Permut is a family physician with a passion for serving underserved communities, a passion that he shares with his students as a tenured professor and chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine. Over the course of his career, he has been awarded fellowships by the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Legal Medicine and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
The Emerging Leader Award, honoring exemplary leadership and promise in medicine: Lynae M. Brayboy, MD ’07.
Dr. Brayboy has published a thesis on oocyte protection from chemotherapy, obtained $165,000 in private and federal funding for her research, designed an app called Girl Talk to teach adolescent girls about sexual education, and won the National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Award for Research for infertility and contraception.
